May Ball/The Night/Edward Lawrence-HughesTrinity May Ball · June 2026

Trinity alumnus · class of 2019 · returning for the first time

Edward Lawrence-Hughes

Came with: Plus-one partner, two visiting American friends, one undergraduate cousin

The night a college becomes a country again.

Arrival

Great Court at 9:47pm, the candles already lit, the first champagne tower complete, the visitors' faces just beginning to register that this is real, not staged.

The arc

Edward came back for the May Ball expecting nostalgia. The night ran the opposite direction: the visitors saw Trinity for the first time, the cousin met someone who would matter, and the survivors' photo at dawn was the photograph that taught him what he had been carrying without knowing.

Moments

The night, by hour.

Each moment is what was actually captured — a photograph, a voice note, a saved track, a face that mattered. The artifact survives the punting at dawn.

Champagne tower in Great Court · 9pm

Rituals

What the night repeated.

  • Survivors' photo at dawn

The single photograph every Trinity ball has produced since 1866. Edward's first as alumnus.

  • Punting on the Cam at 6am

The most-missed ritual. Three of his group made it to the river.

  • The chapel-lit hour

11pm–midnight, when the chapel candles outnumber any other light source in college. The hour the night quiets and shifts.

Meetings

Who the night put in the same room.

  • Mira (current undergrad · PPE)

    Fellows' Garden · 1am

Twelve-minute conversation about whether work-after-Cambridge still feels true. The question Edward took home.

Follow-up · Three-month return visit promised; a longer afternoon in college proposed.

  • Theo (bassist · current undergrad · music)

    Master's Lodge · 11:30pm

The Coltrane cover. The borrowed piano. Edward asked him to send the recording.

Follow-up · Track sent two days later. Invitation to Edward's London concert series in October.

  • Anna (visiting American · friend's friend)

    Secret garden · 3am

Asked about graduate study at Cambridge. Edward routed her to the master of his old college.

Follow-up · Introduction made the following week.

The memory card

Trinity May Ball 2026 · the chapel-lit hour

The artifact Edward kept: dawn photograph, partner's voice note, three saved tracks, twelve-minute garden conversation transcribed, and a single survivor's-photo print delivered by the committee three weeks later.

The photograph

The dawn photograph on the Wren Library steps. The partner in the middle. The two American friends visibly tired and laughing. Edward looking past the camera at his cousin Mira, who is looking at the river.

A question for the college

"Could the college keep one room available year-round for alumni returning to finish conversations the ball started?"

The guest leaves the night with a question for the college, not a survey. The committee inherits a routable conversation.

Keep this

A night thread that survives the morning.

When you opt in, this night becomes part of your college thread. Next year's ball remembers your moments. Alumni in five years can find each other through what they shared, not just where they sat.
